At Highland Youth Football & Cheer, we believe that youth sports should be positive, developmental, and fun. Our coaching philosophy is rooted in the idea that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and feel confident—regardless of their skill level or experience. We emphasize effort, teamwork, accountability, and respect, and our coaching staff is expected to model these values in every interaction.
We use the “Three L’s” approach to guide how we coach, teach, and engage with athletes at every level:
While physical fitness is important, we don’t use lap running as a form of punishment or conditioning. Instead, we design drills and activities that mirror real-game situations—short bursts of speed, change of direction, and high-intensity repetitions that reflect the pace of football or cheer routines. Our goal is to condition athletes through the game itself, helping them build functional strength and endurance while staying mentally engaged.
Practice time is limited, and we want every minute to count. Long lines where athletes stand around and wait for their turn do little to improve skills or keep energy high. Instead, we divide into smaller groups, run multiple stations, and ensure that every athlete is getting frequent reps, feedback, and coaching. Active athletes are learning athletes — and our structure ensures they stay in motion and involved.
We keep instruction clear, concise, and focused. Athletes, especially at the youth level, have short attention spans. Lectures that go on too long lose their effectiveness. Our coaching standard is to keep teaching points under 10 words and focus on 1–2 key takeaways per correction. This method not only helps athletes retain what they learn, but also keeps practices fast-paced and fun.
Create a safe and inclusive environment where every child feels supported and encouraged.
Teach fundamentals and techniques appropriate to each age group, ensuring long-term skill development.
Build character and confidence through discipline, effort, and teamwork.
Celebrate progress — not just wins — and always recognize hard work and improvement.
Communicate clearly and respectfully with athletes, parents, and fellow coaches.
Represent Highland Youth Football & Cheer with professionalism, positivity, and pride.
We are not just developing players — we are helping to shape confident, respectful, and responsible young people. Coaches play a powerful role in that mission, and we are committed to selecting individuals who share our vision of what youth sports should be.
