🔥 HYF&C Heat Index Safety Guidelines – Based on USA & OCYFL Football Standards 🔥
The health and safety of our athletes is our top priority. Highland Youth Football & Cheer follows the USA Football Heat & Hydration Guidelines with our own league-specific policy in place:
If the heat index (not temperature) is over 96°F at the time of practice or an event, HYF&C will cancel for the safety of all participants.
Below is how we handle different heat index levels:
🌡️ Under 90°F – Normal Practice Conditions
Provide water breaks every 20 minutes minimum.
Encourage athletes to hydrate before, during, and after practice.
Coaches actively monitor for signs of heat exhaustion or dehydration.
🌡️ 90°F to 95°F – Elevated Caution
Water breaks every 15 minutes.
Reduce practice intensity and limit conditioning drills.
Allow more frequent rest periods and encourage shade when possible.
Monitor all players closely for heat-related symptoms.
🌡️ 96°F or Higher – Practice or Event is CANCELED
As per HYF&C policy, no outdoor practice, games, or events will be held when the heat index reaches or exceeds 96°F.
This is to prevent heat stroke, dehydration, and other serious health issues.
Rescheduling will be communicated as needed.
💧 Parent Hydration Reminders:
Pre-hydrate your child at home with water throughout the day.
Bring a large, labeled water bottle to every practice or game.
Avoid energy drinks or soda before physical activity.
Keep encouraging hydration after practices as well.
📢 Stay Informed:
Heat index decisions are made using reliable weather services and will be announced via team chat in SPORTSYOU no later than 1 hour before scheduled practices.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping HYF&C a safe, healthy, and fun experience for every player and cheerleader!
